Peat mining started in the Bog in the 1930s. One thousand acres of the Burns Ranch was purchased in 1938 by the BC Peat Company, Ltd. for $25,000. They had plans to construct a road to access the bog along with a peat plant costing $75,000. They presented their plan to the Delta Council and failed to produce the plant after spending $300,000. BC Peat Company did not operate and Atkins & Burbrow Ltd. began successfully running the peat plant. In 1964, Western Peat Moss Ltd bought this plant.
Peat mining gained popularity in World War II as the American Government used peat from the bog to refine magnesium for bombs. Two peat plants opened between 1942 and 1944 as peat was a crucial material required for the war. At one point, the US Government contemplated buying around 200 acres of the Bog.
